원숭이를 대상으로 한 실험 결과
중앙에 긴 막대기가 세워져 있는 한 방에 원숭이 네 마리를 넣어두었다.
그 막대의 꼭대기에는 바나나가 메달려 있었다.
베가 고픈 한 원숭이가 먹을 것을 얻기 위해 막대기를 타고 올라가기 시작했다.
그러나 바나나를 잡아채려는 순간, 억수같이 퍼붓는 찬물을 뒤집어쓰고 말았다.
그 원숭이는 질겁하여 비명을 지르며 재빨리 막대기에서 내려왔고 먹으려는 시도를 포기하고 말았다.
모든 원숭이가 비슷한 시도를 했으나, 모두 다 찬물을 뒤집어쓰고 말았다.
몇 번의 시도 후에 그들은 결국 포기하고 말았다.
그 후, 연구원들이 그 원숭이들 중 한 마리를 방에서 꺼내고 새로운 원숭이를 집어넣었다.
새로 들어온 원숭이가 막대기를 타고 올라가기 시작하자, 다른 세 원숭이들이 그 녀석을 잡고 바닥으로 끌어내렸다.
막대기를 올려 할 때마다 번번이 다른 원숭이들에게 끌려 내려오던 그 원숭이는 마침내 포기했고 다시는 오르려하지 않았다.
연구원들은 원래 있었던 원숭이들을 한 마리씩 뺴낼 때마다 매번 새로운 원숭이를 들여보냈고,
새로 들어간 원숭이는 바나나를 잡기도 전에 다른 원숭이들에 의해 막대기에서 끌려 내려왔다.
얼마 지나지 않아서 그 방은 한 번도 찬물 세례를 받은 경험이 없는 원숭이들로 채워졌다.
그러나 어떤 원숭이도 막대기를 타고 올라가려 하지 않았고, 왜 그런지 이유조차 몰랐다.
